Can I challenge your thinking for just a minute?

Not because I have all the answers. I certainly do not. But I do think we have stopped asking some really good questions.

Can I ask you something?

How many times have you been trying to explain why you are upset only to hear, "Is it that time of the month?"

Seriously?

Every woman reading this just rolled her eyes.

Most of us hated being reduced to our hormones. We wanted someone to actually hear us, understand us, and realize we were more than a menstrual cycle.

So here is what I find fascinating. Why are we doing it to ourselves now?

Somewhere along the way, many women started reducing themselves to a hormone level.

"I am exhausted. It must be my hormones."

"I cannot remember why I walked into the kitchen. Hormones."

"I am gaining weight. Hormones."

"I do not feel like myself anymore. Hormones."

Now hear me carefully. Hormones matter. They absolutely matter. They are just not the whole story. Maybe it is time we stop reducing ourselves to our hormone levels because we have always been so much more than that.

Humor me for a second.

What if we have made hormones the entire conversation?

If I had a dollar for every woman who has looked at me and said, "Barbara, my hormones are low. I guess I need HRT," I would probably be writing this from a beach somewhere.

Before anyone gets worked up, let me say this. This is not an anti-HRT series. Not even close. Hormone replacement therapy has helped many women. For some, it is an appropriate part of their healthcare journey. That is a decision every woman should make with her healthcare provider.

But here is the question I keep asking.

What else deserves a seat at the table?

When someone tells me they are struggling, my mind does not stop at hormones. I start wondering about their sleep, stress, heart, brain, nervous system, gut, muscles, breathing, blood sugar, inflammation, and antioxidant status.

Why?

Because you are not just one hormone.

You are an entire system.

I think we have become a culture that is uncomfortable with aging. We spend billions trying to look younger. We color our hair. We smooth our wrinkles. We use Botox, fillers, and filters. Somewhere along the way, we started believing that if our bodies changed, something must be wrong.

But what if we have been asking the wrong question?

Your body is not failing. It is doing what biology has always done. It is changing.

That does not mean you have to accept feeling miserable. It does not mean you stop taking care of yourself. Actually, I think it means the exact opposite. This season of life may be the most important time to invest in your health.

Over the last few years, I have had countless conversations with women who were convinced they already knew the answer.

"It is my hormones."

Sometimes they are right. Sometimes hormones are a significant piece of the puzzle. But rarely are they the entire puzzle.

Hormones do not function by themselves. Neither does your heart. Neither does your brain. Neither does your gut. Neither does your nervous system.

Your body is an incredibly intelligent, interconnected system. Every part influences another. That is why I do not believe the conversation should begin and end with one hormone level.

That is also why this series is different.

Yes, we are going to talk about hormones. We are also going to talk about heart health, brain health, gut health, nervous system regulation, breathing, HRV, muscle, bone, sleep, inflammation, antioxidants, and healthy aging. We will explore current research, challenge a few ideas, maybe even some of my own, and most importantly, ask better questions.

Because I do not want you thinking you are just a hormone level on a lab report.

You are not.

You are a whole woman.

When we start supporting the whole woman instead of chasing one symptom, everything changes. That is the conversation I would like to have with you.

Welcome to Beyond Menopause.

I am really glad you are here.

Until next time, keep asking better questions.
